A makeover for ‘Some Girls’

The year was 1978 and it was a turbulent time for rock music. Disco and punk began to dominate the airwaves threatening to render rock giants obsolete and musical genres were merging and cross-pollinating like a transnational apple farmer. But rock and roll stalwarts the Rolling Stones had no intentions of accepting the transformation without a fight. In May 1978, they released ‘Some Girls’. With a contentious album cover and a touch of dance influence regarded as unusual for the rockers, the album garnered a lot of attention. It went on to the be the band’s best selling release and is arguably their finest work.

The album is being re-released this year in the form of a Super Deluxe boxed set that includes two CDs (one consisting of entirely unreleased tracks), a 7-inch vinyl single, a hardback book, a set of postcards, Helmut Newton prints and a poster. As we prepare for a Rolling Stones tribute in a few week’s time, we felt it necessary to share this new development. Make sure you head to the Red Door in Maritzburg on the December 10 for an awesome night of Stones goodness. But for now, here’s a look at what you get in the new boxed set.
