The weekly top 5 playlist – 8 August – Birth of the blues

From the field hollers and narrative ballads of the Deep South emerged a powerful genre that fought its way into the American history books. It’s this incredible history that inspires contemporary artists to continue the legacy. From the short-lived career of Robert Johnson (he is a lesser known member of the 27-club), to the true blues grit of Huddie ‘Lead Belly’ Ledbetter, these artists are the pioneers of a genre that has spread its wings far and wide (it even made its way to sunny South Africa!). Here’s a collection of some of the true blues classics that started it all.

  1. Sonny Boy Williamson – Good Morning Little Schoolgirl
  2. Robert Johnson – Crossroads
  3. Bessie Smith – Nobody Knows When You’re Down and Out
  4. Leadbelly – Rock Island Line
  5. Blind Boy Fuller – Evil Hearted Woman
